Meet Our Founder

Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Andrea first moved to the United States when she was eight years old. She has spent most of her years since, traveling and living between the two countries and is influenced by both cultures. At 17, she pursued a BFA in Interior Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she first discovered ceramic arts. Graduating in 2016, she went directly into Interior Design, even as her love and knowledge of ceramics grew.

When the pandemic hit at the beginning of 2020, she lost her 9-5 design job. As many of us experienced, there was a loss of income and routine, but also an increase in time and opportunity for growth. As the world learned to adapt, so did Andrea. She decided to make the best of an unexpected turn of events and embraced her love of handmade products and her entrepreneurial spirit. Alterra was quickly born.

Our name, Alterra, is inspired by ceramic’s pure connection to nature, being made entirely of earth, altered by water and fire. Our products start out as unformed blocks of clay that go through an extensive transformation in our founder’s hands to become the mug, bowl, or plate in your hands. “Alterra” is a reminder of this magical metamorphosis.
